Independent research consultants

 

Dr Steve Webster is an independent researcher and consultant, with substantial experience of social research gained particularly within the voluntary and community sector (VCS). Steve also works with a number of research associates and, on some projects, with academic partners at Sheffield Hallam University. For example, he was the lead researcher in the team from the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) at Sheffield Hallam University, which recently undertook a needs analysis of the Voluntary and Community Sector in Rotherham.


Other recent projects include an impact assessment of the work of the South Yorkshire Funding Advice Bureau (SYFAB), an evaluation of the regional ICT Programme for the VCS in the South East, and research and mapping of funding advisers networks in England.


Steve has over 20 years experience of working within the voluntary and community sector. He has extensive experience of both working for voluntary and community organisations (VCOs) and undertaking research with them - at local, regional and national levels. For example, Steve worked for the Regional Forum for VCOs in Yorkshire and the Humber before switching to independent research work in 2003. He has also worked as a tutor and advisor with the Open University within the region.


Steve is an NCVO approved consultant, with an entry in the 2008 Directory of NCVO Approved Consultants (NCVO is the National Council for Voluntary Organisations). He is also a member of the Voluntary Sector Studies Network (VSSN) – the recognised network for academic and other researchers with an interest in the voluntary and community sector.

Teresa Tinklin MSc is an independent researcher with 16 years experience of social research gained in the fields of education and the voluntary and community sector. She is experienced in the use of both quantitative and qualitative research methods, and has particular expertise in the analysis of large and small datasets. She has managed large and small research projects and written numerous articles, reports and publications including a book on provision for disabled students in higher education (with co-authors Professor Sheila Riddell and Alastair Wilson). She has particular knowledge of issues of inequality, relating to gender, social class and disability, as well as a particular understanding of issues of mental health.

 

Teresa was one of the key members of the team from the Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research (CRESR) at Sheffield Hallam University, which undertook a needs analysis of the voluntary and community sector (VCS) in Rotherham. In addition to this project, she has collaborated with Dr Steve Webster on a number of other projects in the voluntary and community sector, including an impact assessment of the work of the South Yorkshire Funding Advice Bureau (SYFAB) and research on VCS funding advisers networks. Her recent projects in education include studies of student mental health in higher education in Scotland; a large-scale analysis of qualifications datasets for the Scottish Qualifications Authority, assessing progress and pass rates in new national qualifications; and an investigation of how multiple policy innovations in higher education in Scotland and England have impacted on the day to day experiences of disabled students.

 

Teresa worked as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Educational Sociology at the University of Edinburgh before becoming an independent researcher in 2004. In addition, more recently she has retrained to teach Pilates and to do reflexology.
